About Us

  • What is Omusubi?

    Mission Statement

    What is Omusubi?

Omusubi (also called Onigiri) are Japanese rice balls with different fillings inside, wrapped with or without nori. Sunny Blue is proud to be the first and only omusubi store in Southern California, where we make omusubi fresh daily or made to order.

In Japan, people of all ages eat omusubi everyday like we eat sandwiches here in the United States. It is a grab and go for our customers to savor them any time and anywhere.

Omusubi is derived from a Japanese word “musubu” which means to hold together or connect. It is the perfect word that defines Sunny Blue, where we believe in holding hands with the local businesses and local customers while connecting with the environment.

    Mission Statement

Our mission is to create an environment where people can come together and experience fast, healthy food in a fun environment with exceptional customer service.

We also believe in trying our best to be environmentally aware. When possible we use take out bags, boxes, cutlery made of recycled or biodegradable materials. But of course, we encourage you to bring in your own containers for us to fill. And as an incentive, we will deduct 10 cents every time you bring your own container.

We try to support artisans and local farmers who can provide us with fresh and natural ingredients to create home style Asian flavors.

Certain eateries just have it just right, and this Japanese Omusubi shop is one of them.  The first shop of it’s kind in Southern California, Sunny Blue recently celebrated the opening of a second location in Culver City, just a few miles south of the original Santa Monica location.

Another addition to Culver City's restaurant row.
Sunny Blue has landed in Culver City. The Santa Monica omusubi (that’s Japanese rice ball to you, which is sometimes also called onigiri) shop has won over hearts and tongues with their interesting combo of rice balls and frozen yogurt.
Billing itself as Southern California’s only omusubi shop (though another is headed to Melrose), Sunny Blue has made quite a name for itself in Santa Monica, slinging options like the Tokyo Tori, with chicken in a sweet and sour sauce.

Culver City's restaurant row is starting to get packed with new eateries.
Toddrickallen reports that Sunny Blue, that popular Japanese onigiri spot with a location on Main Street Santa Monica, is close to opening on ever-crowded Washington Blvd in Culver City. With most of the interior construction complete and a hiring sign on the window, it's only a matter of time before the rice ball purveyor debuts on what might be the most compelling restaurant row in this part of town.
